Afrobeat Music
Sonny Roberts produced and recorded Afrobeat music in 1972 with the Nigerian band - Nkengas. This album is regarded as iconic by Nigerians. Quite an accomplishment at the time for a Jamaican to produce Afrobeat music in the 1970’s. Sonny went onto producing a series of albums with Nkengas , as well as producing other artists from Africa .

Rhythm Brothers Band
A West African band that gave West African music a powerful voice, captivating audiences wherever they played. The legendary afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti who was groundbreaking in his own right, but Kuti followed in the footsteps of the likes of the Rhythm Brothers Band. Sonny Roberts produced their album Zorro in 1975 in London.The exhibition Beyond the Bassline - 500 years of Black British Music showcased some of Fela Kuti’s artefacts, including the following caption that mentions the Rhythm Brothers Band. This exhibition was held at the British Library in London from April - August 2024.
